The Lakewood Ranch girls soccer team’s quest for a second straight trip to the state tournament will have to wait — at least for one more day.

Friday’s Class 4A-Region 3 final between the Mustangs (22-0-1) and Seminole (22-3-1) was postponed and will be played at 3 p.m. Saturday at Lakewood Ranch.

But it wasn’t a wet field that caused the postponement, even though rain fell almost all day.

A bank of lights spewed flames when school officials flipped the switch about 50 minutes before the match was scheduled to start. The resulting outage left a dark patch on one corner of the field.

“It’s too important a match to have a bank of lights out,” Lakewood Ranch head coach Guy Virgilio said. “It’ll be safer if we play it in the afternoon.”
