Bicyclist struck on Siesta Key by motorist

SARASOTA -- A 58-year-old bicyclist was struck and injured by a motorist on Siesta Key who raced away from the scene before waiting for law enforcement.

The hit-and-run accident occurred at 4:10 p.m. Friday at Higel Avenue and Roberts Point Road, according to a Florida Highway Patrol report.

The bicyclist saw a vehicle stopped at the stop sign at Roberts Point Road and started to cross with his bicycle, the report states.

For unknown reasons, the driver of the vehicle accelerated and hit the bicyclist in the left leg, causing a minor injury, according to the report.

According to the bicyclist, the driver got out of her vehicle, helped him up off the ground, then got back in her car and drove away.

The vehicle is described as blue or purple and possibly a Chevrolet.

The driver is described as a woman, possibly 35 to 40 years old.
