GAME NOTES: The Southern Conference-leading Chattanooga Mocs put their nine- game winning streak on the line Saturday against the visiting UNC Greensboro Spartans.
In Thursday's 84-63 win over Elon, Chattanooga trailed 8-0 less than two minutes in but controlled play from there. The Mocs were ahead by nine at halftime and shot 20-of-22 from the foul line over the final 20 minutes to keep their winning streak alive.
Chattanooga boasts a solid frontcourt led by Z. Mason, who is averaging a team-high 19.0 points and 9.6 rebounds per game. Guard Ronrico White is next in line with an average of 12.2 points in 12 games off the bench since returning to the court after offseason hip surgery. Rounding out the Mocs' key contributors are Casey Jones, a 57-percent shooter from the floor who averages 11.1 ppg and 6.0 rpg, and fellow guard Gee McGhee, who is scoring 10.6 ppg.
Mason posted his 10th double-double of the season and third straight overall with a 27-point, 11-rebound performance on Thursday, while White and Gee chipped in with 13 points apiece in the resounding victory.
Chattanooga outrebounded Elon, 35-25, scoring 15 second-chance points off 11 offensive rebounds.
UNC Greensboro, meanwhile, has lost two in a row on the heels of a strong 3-1 start in conference action. The latest setback came Thursday in an 88-78 decision at Samford, coming off a 93-82 home loss against Davidson.
The Spartans were led by Kyle Cain and his double-double of 23 points and 11 rebounds. Kayel Locke scored 14 points on 7-of-7 shooting from the field and Tevon Saddler added 13 points, getting 11 points from the free-throw line.
Nicholas Paulos, who had connected on 10 consecutive 3-pointers over his previous two games, made his first 3-pointer on Thursday before missing his second. He was four shy of tying Todd Leslie's NCAA record of 15 straight.
Cain leads the Spartans with 16.2 ppg and 9.0 rpg. Locke and Saddler add just over 12 ppg, while Paulos, who has hit 42.0 percent of his 3-point tries, nets 10.5 ppg.
UNCG, which is 2-5 on the road this season, scores an average of 71.9 ppg while yielding 74.3 ppg
The Mocs, who have dropped five straight meetings against the Spartans, have torn through the rest of the SoCon so far, and they have not lost at home in more than two months. Don't expect that streak to end Saturday.
