Jesuit stops Noles shy of 3A-9 crown

Tampa Jesuit scored two goals in final seven minutes of the first half and went on to defeat visiting Southeast 3-0 on Friday in a Class 3A-District 9 boys soccer final.

The Seminoles (11-8-2) will still advance to the region quarterfinals, where they will visit Tarpon Springs.

"(The lack of offense) is something we've been trying to fix for a while now," Southeast coach Guy Coleman said. "Hopefully, we'll get it worked out soon.

Boys basketball

CARDINAL MOONEY 50, ENGLEWOOD LEMON BAY 38 -- The host Cougars (13-8) were paced by Ryan McMahon's 17 points and four steals, while Justin Najmy (11 points and four steals), Matt Hueston (six points and six rebounds) and Jared Aabel (six points) chipped in for the victory.

TAMPA BAYSHORE CHRISTIAN 60, SAINT STEPHEN'S 49 -- The visiting Falcons fell to the eighth-ranked team in Class 2A.

Jordon Murrell had 14 points and seven rebounds, and Sid Price added eight points and six assists for the Falcons (6-12).

Nick Rudne had eight points and grabbed seven rebounds for Saint Stephen's. Tampa Bayshore Christian is 20-1.

NORTH PORT 49, BRADEN RIVER 43 -- The visiting Bobcats remained perfect in Class 7A-District 10 competition with a narrow victory over the Pirates.

North Port led 30-13 at the halftime, before the Pirates battled back and cut the deficit to five with 3:30 remaining in the contest.

Zechariah Kendall had game-high 26 points, with 15 in the fourth quarter comeback attempt for the Pirates (10-10, 2-5).

Girls basketball

SOUTHEAST 47, SARASOTA BOOKER 38 -- The Seminoles polished off their 20th consecutive victory by beating the Tornadoes with Bevin Mays (19 points, eight rebounds), Keshawna Robinson (nine points, eight rebounds) and DeAngela Mathis (10 points) leading the offense.

Southeast is 24-1, while Booker fell to 14-11.

JV: Southeast (20-1) defeated Booker 57-18. The top scorer was Moriana Williams with 11 points, followed by Marline Valcin's 10 points and Tootie Cheaves' 9 points.

LAKEWOOD RANCH 65, MANATEE 24 -- The host Mustangs improved to 19-6 on the strength of sophomore Megan Hagy's 15 points, eight rebounds and six steals and freshman LaDazhia Williams' 13 points and seven rebounds.

OUT-OF-DOOR ACADEMY 49, SARASOTA MILITARY ACADEMY 18 -- Lisa Hoffman dropped in a career-high 32 points, while snagging 10 rebounds and tallying five blocks to the lead the Thunder (11-6) in their regular season finale. Jenna Bloch also pitched in 15 points in the lopsided victory.
