Pedestrian killed in Siesta Key accident Wednesday

SARASOTA — A 78-year-old pedestrian was killed Wednesday morning in an accident with a car on Midnight Pass Road on the south end of Siesta Key, according to Florida Highway Patrol.

Maria Fernandez, 35, of Sarasota, was reportedly stopped in the parking lot at 8730 Midnight Pass Road at 9:28 a.m. facing east in a parking space as the pedestrian approached walking northbound on the west sidewalk in front of the Tortuga Club, 8750 Midnight Pass Road.

The FHP reports Fernandez said she accidentally pressed the accelerator of her 2003 Toyota Rav 4 driving over bushes before fatally striking Carol Goodwin, who was taken to Sarasota Memorial Hospital where she was pronounced dead, according to FHP.

Fernandez was charged with driving without a drivers license causing death.
