Sarasota police: Apparent car theft was just a repossession

January 22, 2014

SARASOTA -- A report of a stolen car, with the crime apparently caught on video, wasn't what it seemed.

Sarasota police, which released the security camera footage on Tuesday, said in fact, the vehicle had been repossessed.

The company that repossessed the vehicle came forward after officials saw the footage and police detectives' request for information about what had happened, police said.

Earlier, detectives had checked with various towing companies, none of which had towed the vehicle, police said.

Police began investigating after the vehicle's owner said the vehicle, which had broken down, was missing from the gas station where she had left it.

"The owner of the vehicle signed a law enforcement oath form stating that the vehicle was stolen," police said.

Wednesday's report did not saw whether the woman who made the report would be charged.
