FHP: Hit-and-run driver of a Ford truck or SUV killed bicyclist in Palmetto

January 21, 2014

MANATEE -- Florida Highway Patrol renewed its call for information about the hit-and-run driver who killed bicyclist in Palmetto early Monday.

FHP on Tuesday released photographs of the type of vehicle investigators believe struck Daniel L. Mimbs from behind as he was riding eastbound on the south shoulder of U.S. 301 near 19th Avenue East. Mimbs, 26, later died from his injuries.

"Vehicle parts found at the scene are from the right front headlight assembly of the vehicle," FHP said in a news release.

The parts are from what is believed to be a 1997 to 2004 Ford F150 pickup truck or a 1996 to 2002 Expedition. The vehicle that hit Mimbs is possibly silver or another color with silver trim, FHP said.

"The damage should be to the right front and possibly the right side and windshield of the vehicle," FHP said.

Anyone who witnessed the crash or has any knowledge about the hit-and-run driver and/or the vehicle can call FHP Traffic Homicide Investigator Corp. D. Carroll at 941-751-8366 or crash investigator Trooper J. Donnelly at 941-751-8350.
