HERALD STAFF REPORTJanuary 21, 2014

PALMETTO -- A 26-year-old bicyclist was killed Monday in a hit-and-run collision along U.S. 301 near 19th Avenue East.

The Florida Highway Patrol is searching for the vehicle, possibly a silver Ford with damage to the right front, after they found a piece of the headlight at the scene.

Daniel L. Mimbs was struck from behind as he was riding his bicycle along U.S. 301 just after midnight Monday, according to a Florida Highway Patrol report. The driver of the car collided with the bicycle and them drove away.

Mimbs was taken to Blake Medical Center with critical injuries and later died. The case remains under investigation, according to FHP Lt. Greg Bueno.

The Highway Patrol is asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has information about the hit and run driver or the crash to call crash investigator Trooper J. Donnelly at (941) 751-8350.
