West Lafayette, IN (SportsNetwork.com) - A.J. Hammons connected on a free- throw with one second left to break a 64-64 tie and give the Purdue Boilermakers a 65-64 victory over the Penn State Nittany Lions in Big Ten Conference action at Mackey Arena.
Terone Johnson scored 14 points and grabbed five rebounds for Purdue (13-5, 3-2 Big Ten). Basil Smotherman netted 12 points and pulled down 10 rebounds for the double-double, and Kendall Stephens chipped in 12 points. The Boilermakers have won three games in a row.
Tim Frazier scored a game-high 19 points for Penn State (9-10, 0-6), adding 10 rebounds. D.J. Newbill chipped in 17 points and 10 rebounds in the loss. The Nittany Lions have lost six consecutive contests, and seven of their last eight.
Purdue hit 36.7 percent of its shots from the floor in the first half, yet still took a 35-33 lead into halftime. Penn State shot 37.5 percent in the first frame.
The Boilermakers shot much worse from the field in the second half, hitting just 25.9 percent on 7-of-27 shooting. Penn State hit 35.7 percent from the floor, but was outscored at the free-throw line in the second period, 14-10, including the game-winning shot from the charity stripe.
Purdue outrebounded Penn State, 44-33, and outshot the Nittany Lions from the free-throw line, 22-13.
