Davis, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Taylor Johns scored 22 points as the UC Riverside Highlanders used a second half surge to defeat the UC Davis Aggies, 81-69, in a Big West Conference showdown at The Pavilion.
Sam Finley provided a spark off the bench for UC Riverside (6-11, 1-2 BWC) with 19 points and six rebounds. Chris Patton added 14 points while Steven Thornton netted 13 on 5-of-7 shooting from the field.
Corey Hawkins paced the Aggies (5-13, 0-3) with 18 points and five assists. Georgi Funtarov scored 14 points and Avery Johnson finished with 12. Iggy Nujic posted 10 points and nine rebounds in UC Davis's third consecutive setback.
The Aggies played very well on the offensive end in the opening period, connecting on 50 percent of their field goal attempts including 9-of-17 from 3-point range. UC Riverside went into halftime trailing, 41-27, after it hit on 40 percent of its shots from the floor in the first half.
UC Davis cooled off to connect on just 31.8 percent of its shots from the field in the second stanza. The Highlanders converted 70.8 percent of their field goal tries including 6-of-7 from beyond the arc to overcome the double- digit deficit. UC Riverside went on a 21-4 run to make it a two-point game with 10:16 left in regulation. The Highlanders took the lead on a Johns layup with 6:26 showing on the clock and stayed in front the rest of the way.
In addition to knocking down 7-of-9 shots from 3-point range, UC Riverside also enjoyed a 33-26 edge in the rebounding battle.
