Braden River girls clinch region berth

Four different players scored goals as the host Braden River girls soccer team earned a rematch with rival Lakewood Ranch by defeating Punta Gorda Charlotte 4-0 on Wednesday in a Class 4A-District 11 semifinal.

Ashlynn Shellentrager, Carley Engelberger, Abigail Holmes and Jade Nealey scored for the Pirates (17-2-2), who will visit the unbeaten Mustangs at 7 p.m. Friday in a district final.

Carly Provan and Krystin Bailey each had two assists for Braden River. Kat Elliott made six saves. The Pirates continue to play without top player Kayla Gray, who is returning from the Cayman Islands after playing with the Jamaican National Team.

Boys soccer

PALMETTO 2, RIVERVIEW 2 -- The visiting Tigers scored two second-half goals, both by Ben Espinal, to salvage a tie with the Rams.

Palmetto (17-2-1) also got an assist from Gregorio Calvillo and four saves from the keeper combination of Matt Simmonds and Andy Perez.

SAINT STEPHEN'S 3, CARDINAL MOONEY 3 -- Jeremy Jackman, Alex Virgilio and Jorge Zavala scored for the Falcons in a deadlock with the host Cougars.

Zavala added two assists, and Jon Boyd had one. J.J. Byrnes made 19 saves for Saint Stephen's (9-1-1).

Girls basketball

SOUTHEAST 57, RIVERVIEW 21 -- DeAngela Mathis led the way with 18 points as the host Seminoles (21-1) ran their winning streak to 17 games.

Keshawna Robinson and Janelle Gould had 11 and 10 points, respectively. Breyonna Reed dished out eight assists.

• Marlene Valcin scored 14 points, and Moriana Williams added 12 as the Southeast junior varsity team claimed a 43-27 victory over Riverview. The Seminoles are 15-1.

Boys basketball

BAYSHORE 61, LAKEWOOD RANCH 56 -- The host Bruins held off a Mustangs rally to win their sixth game in seven tries and improve to 11-9. Wesley Jackson paced Bayshore with 23 points and 10 rebounds. Justin Harris contributed 15 points and eight boards. Lakewood Ranch (8-11) got 29 points from Sam Hester.


VENICE 36, MANATEE 35 -- The host Hurricanes wrestled the Indians to a 35-35 tie but Venice was awarded the win on criteria. Manatee was called for an unsporstmanlike penalty during one of the bouts. Venice wasn't called for any.

Caleb Rudisill (113 pounds), Tyreke Hoyte (128), Jesse Fulk (170) and John Baldwin (182) all won by pin for the Hurricanes. Dakoda Dossey recorded a technical fall during the dual's final bout at 160 pounds.

Alex Ginn (152) and Marshall Craig (106) scored decisions for Manatee, which is now 30-7.
