Semi sideswipe sends 2 Sarasotans spinning in hit-and-run crash

January 14, 2014

MANATEE — The Florida Highway Patrol reported two people escaped serious injury in a hit-and-run accident at 7:40 p.m. Tuesday at mile marker 228 on Interstate 75 in Manatee County.

FHP Trooper G. Monge reported a semi-trailer and a 2008 Chevy Aveo were southbound on I-75 just south of I-275 when the semi began to change lanes into the center lane, apparently failing to see the Aveo. The left side of the trailer sideswiped the Aveo’s right side sending the smaller car spinning into the median where it overturned on its roof facing west.

The 83-year-old male driver from Sarasota and his 81-year-old female passenger from Sarasota sustained minor injuries. They were taken to Manatee Memorial Hospital where they were treated and released, FHP reported.

The semi continued southbound on I-75 without stopping, FHP reported. FHP reported semi was pulling a white trailer with damage to the left side, a silver metallic back door with four reflecting rectangles, a tag of 77599 with state unknown and black mud flaps with white “KB” letters.

Anyone who saw this crash or has any knowledge as to the identity or location of the hit-and-run driver or vehicle, is asked to contact FHP at 941-751-7647.
