Recap: DePaul vs. St Johns

Rosemont, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - Billy Garrett finished with 21 points and five assists to lead the DePaul Blue Demons to a 77-75 victory over the St. John's Red Storm in a Big East clash at Allstate Arena.

Brandon Young added 19 points and five assists of his own for DePaul (10-8, 2-3 Big East), which has won consecutive conference games for the first time since 2008. Also in double figures for the Blue Demons were Cleveland Melvin (16 points), who also tallied six blocks, and Tommy Hamilton (13 points).

St. John's (9-7, 0-4) fell for the third straight game despite getting a game- high 24 points from D'Angelo Harrison. Rysheed Jordan tacked on 16 points and Orlando Sanchez chipped in 11.

The teams were deadlocked at 38-38 at halftime. The Red Storm shot 48.4 percent from the floor, including a perfect 5-of-5 showing from 3-point range, but was outscored 11-3 from the free-throw line. The Blue Demons connected on 39.4 percent from the field, but had two additional field goal attempts in the period.

In the second half it was DePaul which lit it up from beyond the arc, nailing 5-of-9 from 3-point distance as part of a 41.4 percent shooting effort in the period overall. St. John's shot 46.4 percent in the frame, but did not have a field goal in the final 4:35.

DePaul outscored St. John's in second chance points, 18-8, while owning the glass (38-32).
