U.S. 41 overpass in Palmetto OK after truck collision

January 14, 2014

PALMETTO — The Florida Department of Transportation has determined there was no structural damage Tuesday after a semi-trailer hit the U.S. 41 overpass over U.S. 301 in Palmetto.

The accident occurred at 2 p.m., according to Deputy Chief Scott Tyler of the Palmetto Police Department.

“The crash happened when a flatbed trailer with a tractor on the back approached the bridge with a mowing arm on it. The arm of the tractor was up too high and clipped the bridge,” Tyler said.

The Florida Department of Transportation determined the bridge had some minor cosmetic damage but nothing structural, Tyler said. The FDOT will fix the damage, Tyler said. “We’re not sure when they will be back out,” Tyler added.

The crash resulted in one eastbound lane on the overpass being closed while FDOT checked the bridge, Tyler said.

“The bridge is completely open now,” Tyler said around 6 p.m. Tuesday.
