Common Core Standards changes at a glance

Proposed additions and changes to the Common Core State Standards include:

• requiring elementary-school students to master cursive writing;

• requiring first-graders to learn how to use a ruler and identify the value of coins;

• requiring second-graders to determine unknown numbers in mathematical equations;

• requiring sixth-graders to understand the concept of pi as the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter; and

• requiring ninth-graders to use theorems about triangles and parallelograms to solve problems.

The state Department of Education has also proposed clarifications to existing standards and 52 new calculus standards.
