MANATEE -- A 27-year-old woman was charged with child abuse after he abandoned her 1-year-old child by a mail box in Palmetto, according to the Manatee County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies said Erin Carnes placed her 1-year-old child by the mail box in front of a home on the 1600 block of 17th Street East at 3:20 p.m. Sunday. Carnes then drove off because she believed the father of the child lived there with a 43-year-old woman, according to a report.

Carnes later returned and dropped off two bags of baby belongings and left again. The woman who reported the incident claims the suspect never gave her the child nor did she agreed to take the child, the sheriff's office said.

Carnes was then involved in an accident while driving over the Green Bridge. Bradenton police reported she threatened to jump off the bridge but they were able to prevent it.

Sgt. Anthony Cernaglia told Carnes that "things are not that bad come over here and give me a hug," a police report states.

"The female did just that and thus she did not jump," the report states.

The suspect’s grandmother picked up the child. Child Protective Services was notified and the suspect was transported to Manatee Memorial Hospital. CPS responded to the grandmother’s house and placed the child with her.

After being checked out at Manatee Memorial Hospital, Carnes was taken to the Manatee County jail. She is being held on $10,000 bond on a charge of child abuse.
