Women voters to host talk on sex trafficking

BRADENTON -- The League of Women Voters of Manatee County will present a public information program on the crime of sex trafficking on Monday.

Speaking will be Sarah Houck of Selah Freedom, a local organization that works with victims. Bradenton Police detective Kevin Bunch and Manatee County Sheriff's Office detective Theron Robinson will discuss what law enforcement is doing about this problem.

The event will be held at the Bradenton Woman's Club, 1705 Manatee Ave. W., from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Doors open at 11:30 a.m. for a light lunch; program begins at noon.

The event is open to the public and free of charge.

Renaissance on 9th to host open house

BRADENTON -- The Senior Enrichment Center at Renaissance on 9th will host an open house on Friday, Jan. 24, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Admission is free, and light refreshments will be offered, including samplings of Grandma's Goodies cookies. The 9th Street Bistro will serve a special $5 lunch. Additionally, attendees are invited to take a tour of the facility and can take advantage of a discount on membership.

In conjunction with the Open House, Renaissance on 9th's Generations Gift Shop will be having a sidewalk sale, featuring jewelry, accessories, home décor, and gift items. Bright House Networks Senior Talent Show auditions will also be taking place, and people of all ages are welcome to join the audience for a fun afternoon of live entertainment and raffle prizes.

SCF Collegiate School honored for FCAT scores

BRADENTON --State College of Florida Collegiate School has been recognized by the Florida Department of Education as a high-performing charter school after earning its third consecutive '"A" grade based on students' Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) scores.

Kelly Monod, head of school, also received a handwritten congratulatory note from Gov. Rick Scott recognizing SCFCS students' high performance in math and science.

SCFCS is a tuition-free public charter school with grades 6-12 located at SCF Bradenton. The first class will graduate in spring 2014.

Braden River Soccer Club registration deadline nears

Braden River Soccer Club's spring recreational program will run from March 2 to May 4.

The registration deadline is Jan. 25.
