University Park, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Noah Vonleh scored a career-high 19 points as the Indiana Hoosiers defeated the Penn State Nittany Lions, 79-76, in a Big Ten Conference matchup at the Bryce Jordan Center.
Yogi Ferrell tallied 15 points and seven assists to help the Hoosiers (11-5, 1-2 Big Ten) rebound from back-to-back losses to ranked teams and secure their first league victory.
D.J. Newbill matched a career-high with 24 points for the Nittany Lions (9-8, 0-4), who have dropped four straight. Ross Travis and Tim Frazier rounded out the double-digit scorers with 13 and 10 points, respectively.
Penn State knocked down six first-half 3-pointers and led by as many as 15 midway through the opening frame. The Hoosiers shot just 32.3 percent from the floor in the first half and trailed, 41-37, at intermission.
IU turned things around in the second half by connecting on 5-of-10 threes and shooting 15-of-18 at the foul line. A 3-pointer by Austin Etherington with 1:22 left gave the Hoosiers the lead for good, as they went 6-of-6 at the charity stripe in the final minute to avoid their worst start in conference play in three years.
The Hoosiers shot just 36.2 percent from the floor for the game, but they made up for it by converting 29-of-35 free throws (.829).
