Congratulations to Mixon's Fruit Farm, Air Products

January 11, 2014

Congratulations to Mixon Fruit Farms on the citrus operation's 75th anniversary this week. The celebration attracted none other than Gov. Rick Scott, a regular visitor to this popular agricultural attraction.

The governor came to town Thursday for the ceremony to launch Air Products and Chemical Inc.'s new Port Manatee manufacturing plant, a big plus for the county and port.

Scott went from igniting the first plasma torch there to enjoying a dreamsicle-like orange-and-vanilla ice cream, his favorite, at Mixon's.

The Mixon family enterprise has survived bouts with citrus diseases and grove losses by expanding into an agritourism destination, a smart move.

Air Products, a Fortune 500 gas equipment manufacturer, promises to create 250 jobs here, quite the coup for Manatee County. Small wonder our "jobs" governor flew down for the ceremony.

And he was practically on his home turf at Mixon's, a regular host of tea party gatherings.

We welcome Air Products to the community and hope the plant prospers. And Mixon's, well, the venture certainly has blossomed.
