Cheers to Ellenton's Peter Smith for dive to nab cross

January 11, 2014

A heavenly find: Cheers to 18-year-old Peter Smith, the Ellenton youth who had the smarts to dive down to the bottom of Spring Bayou at Tarpon Springs to grab the Epiphany cross.

The annual Jan. 6 event commemorates the baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist, attracting thousands of spectators to watch dozens of boys scramble to find the cross in the chilly water. Most stayed on the surface hoping the cross floated to the top. Nope. Peter dove.

The Saint Stephen's Episcopal School student is the first member of St. Barbara Greek Orthodox Church in Sarasota to earn this annual honor, bringing excitement to the congregation. They'll celebrate with a special blessing service Sunday. That's a double blessing for Peter.
