Welcome to the Letter of the Month contest

January 10, 2014

Letters to the Editor are an immensely popular feature in the Herald, contributing to the community conversation on issues big and small, sometimes humorous, sometimes personal. This Letter of the Month contest will spotlight some of the best short essays, with you, the reader, as the judge.

First, Herald editors will highlight one letter per week. Then as the next month begins, readers can vote online for their choice among those weekly nominations. Voting will be conducted here, at www.bradenton.com/letter-of-the-month. Those weekly selections will be reposted to that web address for easy review, marked as Letter of the Week.

The writer's opinion will not be a consideration for editors in selecting weekly nominations. Letters will be judged on strength of argument, writing style and clarity. Those that address current issues and events will get bonus points. Humor will not be disqualified.

The online voting will begin on the first Sunday of the new month and continue through the following Wednesday. We'll announce the readers' choice that following Sunday on this Opinion page as well as online.

Bradenton Herald is pleased to provide this opportunity to share information, experiences and observations about what's in the news. Some of the comments may be reprinted elsewhere in the site or in the newspaper. We encourage lively, open debate on the issues of the day, and ask that you refrain from profanity, hate speech, personal comments and remarks that are off point. Thank you for taking the time to offer your thoughts.
