GAME NOTES: Big South Conference action is on tap at the Millis Center on Friday evening, as the High Point Panthers play host to the Radford Highlanders.
The Highlanders have played well this season with an 11-5 overall record. The team has won five of its last six games, including opening conference play this week with a 72-63 victory over Liberty.
Wins haven't come so easy for the Panthers, who are 4-10 on the campaign. High Point has dropped eight of its last nine games. Part of that skid includes Wednesday's 74-71 loss at Campbell.
Radford has won three of the last four meetings in this series to take a 19-16 lead all-time. However, High Point holds a 10-7 edge in home games.
The Highlanders didn't shoot the ball particularly well against Liberty (.393), but made up for it by forcing 17 turnovers and outscoring the Flames from the free-throw line, 24-12. R.J. Price led four Radford players in double figures with 18 points. Ya Ya Anderson added 13 points to the cause, while Javonte Green and Rashun Davis finished with 12 points apiece.
Radford has been far more efficient at the offensive end on the season. The Highlanders are averaging 75.8 ppg this year on a healthy .466 shooting percentage. Green makes contributions in a number of areas, leading the team in scoring (15.9 ppg), rebounding (6.5 rpg) and steals (32). Price is next in the scoring column at 13.7 ppg, with Anderson rounding out the top threats at 10.1 ppg.
The Panthers battle back from a 15-point halftime deficit to tie the game at 71-71, but the Camels hit a 3-pointer late to edge out High Point. The Panthers almost completed the comeback by shooting a scorching 65.4 percent from the floor over the final 20 minutes, after struggling with a .385 effort in the first half. Adam Weary led the Panthers with 22 points in the loss. Dejuan McGaughy and John Brown added 15 points each, while Lorenzo Cugini finished with 10. Brown completed a double-double with 10 rebounds.
High Point has struggled at both ends of the floor this season and the result is an ugly -8.1 scoring margin. The Panthers are averaging a modest 67.7 ppg, with a nice portion of that coming via Brown and his 17.9 ppg. The team's depth took a huge hit early on with Allan Chaney (15.4 ppg, 8.6 rpg) getting sidelined with a heart condition. Weary adds 11.0 ppg to serve as a complementary contributor.
The Panthers may be home in this game, but High Point lacks the arsenal to match Radford's.
