January 10, 2014

MANATEE -- A reported carjacking in Bradenton early Friday never happened, according to the Manatee County Sheriff's Office.

Friday morning, the sheriff's office released a report detailing how three people riding in the 1100 block of 57th Avenue East were carjacked, taken to another location and robbed of money. One of the supposed victims was also beaten about the head and face, according to the report.

Friday afternoon, the sheriff's office said the charges were unfounded.

"The victims changed stories several times before telling deputies that the incident was a drug deal gone bad," the sheriff's office said.

The sheriff's office also said one of the supposed victims lied about his name.

An investigation is continuing, according to the sheriff's office.
