San Jose, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - J.J. Avila scored 21 points and pulled down 14 rebounds as the Colorado State Rams slipped by the San Jose State Spartans, 66-64, in Mountain West Conference action at The Event Center.
Also scoring in double figures for the Rams (10-6, 1-2 MWC), as they snapped a two-game slide, were Daniel Bejarano and Joe De Ciman with 15 and 13 points, respectively.
The Spartans (6-9, 0-3) were led by Rashad Muhammad who tallied a game-high 28 points, while Chris Cunningham responded with 13 points and Jaleel Williams 11 in the squad's third straight setback.
Colorado State led by as many as eight points early in the first half, but the team shot only 35.7 percent from the field in the period, compared to 50 percent for the Spartans as the hosts slipped out to a 30-27 advantage at the break.
In the second half both squad connected on just under 46 percent from the floor, but the meeting came down the free throws as Isaac Thornton drew the hosts to within a point at 65-64 on a pair at the charity stripe with 10 seconds to play. Moments later, Bejarano made the first of two at the line in order to secure the two-point win.
In a game that featured 10 ties and 16 lead changes, SJSU came up short despite converting 9-of-19 shots behind the 3-point line.
