Sarasota Orchestra features acclaimed pianist

Pianist Jon Nakamatsu performs in the orchestra's next Masterworks

January 9, 2014

Jon Nakamatsu

The concert is titled "Superb, Sublime, Splendid." So the Sarasota Orchestra is promising great things.

There's also a clue to the concert's program in the title: All the featured composers have names that start with the letter S.

The Orchestra's next Masterworks concert series, set for Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the Van Wezel Performing Arts Center, includes Satie's "Gymnopedies" No. 1 and No. 3, Saint-Saens' "Piano Concerto No. 2 in G Minor, Op. 22 and Richard Strauss' "Ein Heldenleben, Op. 40 (A Hero's Life)."

The piano soloist in the Saint-Saens concerto is Jon Nakamatsu. He won the U.S. National Chopin Competition in 1995 and the prestigious Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in 1997. He's been performing with some of world's best orchestra ever since.

Details: Jan. 10-12, Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall, 777 N. Tamiami Trail, Sarasota. Show times:: 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, 2:30 p.m. Sunday. Tickets: $30-$84. Information: (941) 953-3434, www.sarasotaorchestra.org
