PALMETTO -- Former "American Idol" Scotty McCreery will headline this year's Palmetto Fourth of July Festival in Sutton Park.

With former headliners that include The Village People, The Guess Who and Three Dog Night, city officials decided to take the fourth annual event country.

"This year we decided to move over to country but decided to take it to the younger generation," Palmetto Community Redevelopment Agency Director Jeff Burton said. "We expect to see a whole different flavor of audience."

McCreery, who won television's

"American Idol" in 2010, had a debut album that sold 1.6 million copies. He was the youngest man in history to have his first album make its debut on the Billboard Top 200 albums chart.

Palmetto also is mixing it up by bringing in a current act.

"The fact that he is 'American Idol,' that absolutely doesn't hurt," Burton said. "We just think he is going to bring a whole new generation of audience for us."

A local band will be the opening act, but has yet to be confirmed.

"It ought to be a great Fourth of July," Burton said.
