MANATEE -- A delegation from Bradenton Beach was celebrating Monday after the Manatee County Commission OK'd a plan to replace the island city's Bridge Street Pier.

The plan called for the county to reimburse Bradenton Beach up to 50 percent of the cost, not to exceed $1 million, according to Elliott Falcione, the executive director of the Bradenton Area Convention and Visitors Bureau.

The county's contribution will come from visitor "bed taxes" only, and not from property tax revenues, county officials said.

A happy group representing Bradenton Beach was at the commission meeting at County Administrative Center.

Asked how soon construction on the project might start, Bradenton Beach Mayor Bill Shearon said, "As soon as we can get it going."
