Sarasota police shoot armed suspect to death

SARASOTA -- Two Sarasota police officers late Sunday shot and killed a man who pointed a gun at them and refused their orders to drop the weapon, according to Sarasota police.

About 10:06 p.m. Sunday, two officers on bicycle patrol in the 1000 block of 42nd Street near North Water Tower Park encountered the man, according to a news release.

The man pulled out a gun and reportedly pointed it at the officers. He reportedly refused several commands to drop the weapon.

"The individual refused and in order to defend themselves, the officers fired their duty weapons," the release sates.

Paramedics attempted to revive the man, but he was declared dead on the scene, police said.

The names of the man and the officers were not released.

The officers have been placed on administrative leave, which police said is routine after an officer-involved shooting.

The case remains under investigation by Sarasota police.
