January 5, 2014

MANATEE — The Florida Highway Patrol reported a woman’s diabetic episode while driving caused an accident that left a pedestrian in critical condition Sunday.

The accident occurred at 3:45 p.m. Sunday at 15th Street East and 57th Avenue East, according to the FHP report.

The driver was eastbound on 57th Avenue East near County Road 683 approaching a gate, FHP reported. A pedestrian was in a wheelchair behind the gate off the roadway.

The driver apparently lost consciousness while driving and hit the gate, FHP reported, snapping the chain that held it closed. The gate flew open striking the 51-year-old Bradenton woman in the wheelchair, FHP reported, who is listed in critical condition at Blake Medical Center.

FHP reported no charges have been filed at this time.
