Recap: Ga Southern vs. Samford

Statesboro, GA (SportsNetwork.com) - Jelani Hewitt had 23 points and Tre Bussey scored 22, as the Georgia Southern Eagles fended off the Samford Bulldogs, 80-78, in Southern Conference action at Hanner Fieldhouse.

Kyle Doyle added 12 points and Brian Holmes finished with 10 to help the Eagles (8-8, 1-0 SoCon) open conference play in winning fashion.

Tim Williams led the way with 23 points and eight rebounds for the Bulldogs (6-11, 0-2), who dropped to 1-9 on the road this season. Connor Miller and Isaiah Williams scored 14 apiece, while Tyler Hood and Chris Longoria each scored 11 in the loss.

The Eagles led for much of the opening frame as they shot 50 percent from the floor and made 6-of-11 3-pointers to claim a 40-33 halftime lead.

Bussey scored 17 of his 23 points in the second stanza, and GSU held a 16-8 scoring edge at the foul line over the final 20 minutes to earn the victory.

Although all five of Samford's starters scored in double figures, the bench contributed only five points total. The Bulldogs were also outrebounded by a 33-25 margin for the game.
