"The world is round and the place which may seem like the end, may also be the beginning"
-- Ivy Baker Priest.
This quote seemed like an appropriate way to start a commentary on saying good-bye to one year as we start a new one.
This year had many moments, as do all years, of joy and sadness, growth and loss. Will this new year of 2014 be any different? All we can hope and pray for is more moments of joy than sadness and more growth than loss.
Many of us make resolutions to change certain behaviors as part of our welcoming of a new year. I have decided this year that instead of dwelling on changing myself, I will work harder at what I already do well.
Another quote that I found from Ivy Baker Priest is: "We seldom stop to think how many people's lives are entwined with our own."
We share our planet, our country, our town, our street, our home. The family is the core of our society. When our families are strong, our society is strong.
Here at MOMMs place, that is our mission. We understand that as we help new parents, we are also helping society in general. Our goal is to help families feel confident that they have a place to call or come to when they have a question about caring for their baby. We have been doing this for almost 19, years. We will strive this year to do even a better job at helping families find their compass as they navigate their way through parenthood.
Shortly before he died Theodor Seuss Geisel, also known as Dr. Seuss, was asked if there was anything he wanted to say that he had not already said. He replied: "The best slogan I can think of to leave is: 'We can, and we've got to, always do better.' "
Geisel submitted his first book 27 times before it was accepted to be published. He has inspired generations to do better, try harder and believe. He inspires us with his quote of: "Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not."
We welcome 2014, not only because it is a new year with so many possibilities, but also because we will have new opportunities to show how much we care for each other.
I recently learned how to say goodbye in Turkish -- "gule, gule" -- which means "go with a smile." I love this saying. So I say "gule gule" to 2013, and also welcome 2014 with a smile.
I cannot think of a better way of ending my thoughts of saying good-bye to 2013 with another quote from Dr. Seuss: "You're off to great places! Today is your day! Your mountain is waiting, so get on your way!"
May you have a Happy New Year.
