Large crowd at Lakewood Ranch Jingle Run

December 24, 2013

The Lakewood Ranch Jingle 5K Run attracted more than 1,500 runners last Friday. The event was one of the largest 5K timed races to be held in either Manatee or Sarasota counties, and benefited the Lakewood Ranch Medical Center's Children's Pediatric Unit.

Sarasota's Zackery Summerall won for the second consecutive year by setting a course record at 15 minutes, 42 seconds.

Englewood's Heather Butcher claimed the overall women's title for a second straight year with a time of 18:35.

The top Manatee County times on the male and female sides belonged to Bradenton's Michael Lamb (16:21) and Bradenton's Lauren Hunihan (19:14). They took third and second, respectively, in the male and female divisions. Hunihan's time was good for the masters division title, too.

Other age group champions for the males included: Bradenton's George Dabbiero (Masters, 17:36), Robert Hammond (Grand Masters, 18:29), John Bates (Senior Grand Masters, 21:23) and Lakewood Ranch's Howard Keener (Veterans, 30:33).

Other female age group winners included: Lakewood Ranch's Kerstin

Sundstrom (Grand Masters, 21:21), Sarasota's Brenda Kane (Senior Grand Masters, 28:21) and Sarasota's Carol Westerman (Veterans, 40:32).

Admirals red-hot on the ice

The Manatee County High Admirals are atop the Florida High School Hockey Association's Lightning Conference heading into the holiday break.

The Admirals are 12-1 on the season, with a league-high 107 goals scored. Bradenton's Rhett Rampinelli leads the team with 28 points. The sophomore has scored 13 goals and dished out 15 assists in 12 games.

Sophomore Charlie Schukay, of Bradenton, paces the team with 16 assists.

The club is coming off a 10-2 thumping of Jenkins.

Rampinelli had three assists and two goals in the victory. Other multi-goal scorers were Palmetto freshman Ian Deckard and Parrish junior Chase Bafia, who each tallied two goals apiece.
