Brothers in hot water over East Manatee theft

"The owner of the property did not know these two individuals and did not give them permission to take his hot water heaters," a sheriff's office report states.December 20, 2013

EAST MANATEE -- Two brothers are in hot water after authorities say they stole hot water heaters from a vacant house and sold them for scrap.

The heaters were reported stolen Dec. 2 from a home in the 500 block of Rye Road Northeast, according to the Manatee County Sheriff's Office.

A witness didn't recognize the two men or the vehicle they allegedly used to take the hot water heaters, but she called 911 and was able to provide the vehicle's description and tag number.

That vehicle is registered to Jeffrey Ludlum, who investigators say sold the heaters that same afternoon to a local scrap yard with his brother, Justin Ludlum.

The brothers were arrested Friday and charged with burglary and dealing in stolen property, according to the sheriff's office. Both men were being held in Manatee County jail Friday night.
