Manatee County grass roots effort vital to halting Long Bar Pointe project

December 20, 2013

I want to compliment the Bradenton Herald's editorial staff and its reporters, Charles Schelle and Sarah Kennedy, for the thorough, ongoing coverage of the proposed development of Long Bar Pointe.

As the editorial this week stated, it is important for our citizens to make their voices heard. If the developers fully realize their multibillion plan, all of west Bradenton, from Palma Sola to Bayshore Gardens, as well as the islands from Anna Maria to Longboat Key, will be transformed.

Most of us choose to live here because we love the beautiful gifts that we have from nature. We don't have any desire to see our home become another Miami or Clearwater.

We need many thousands of citizen voices to counter the many millions of developer dollars. We need to show that grass roots can trump political influence, and reason can overcome legal skills.

A crucial test will come at the 9 a.m. Jan. 23 Manatee County Commission meeting at the Bradenton Area Convention Center, 1 Haben Blvd., Palmetto.
