Hurricanes clinch top seed in 5A-8

The Manatee girls soccer team finished off an unbeaten Class 5A-District 8 season and clinched the top seed for the district tournament on Tuesday night with an 8-0 victory over visiting Pinellas Park.

The Hurricanes (8-3-1, 5-0-1) got two goals from Jessica Schafer and a goal and two assists from Clarissa Palmer. Brianna Blethen, Kyra Hines, Madeline Valadie, Tyler Einsmann and Shelby Wood also scored for Manatee. Blethen, Michaella Krebser, Sydney Cornell, Sydney Morrow, Kylie Ameres and Morgan Painter added assists.

Ashley Parker recorded her third shutout.

SOUTHEAST 6, BOOKER 0 -- The visiting Seminoles got two goals each from Daryl Bell and Mallory Robinson to move to 11-2.

Samantha Cline contributed a goal and an assist, and Emma Bartges scored for Southeast. Sonia Makki had an assist, and Angalique Schweitzer made four saves.

BRADEN RIVER 4, SARASOTA 0 -- Abigail Holmes and Kayla Gray each knocked in a pair of goals to carry the host Pirates past the Sailors in Class 4A-District 11 play.

Holmes added an assist as did Elizabeth Shirey for Braden River (13-2-2, 8-2-2). Kat Elliott made four saves.

LAKEWOOD RANCH 6, PORT CHARLOTTE 1 -- Talia Falco scored twice to lead a balanced offensive attack for the visiting Mustangs. Bri Reda and Julia Nordhaufen each added a goal and an assist.

Julia Ortiz and Lindsey Martinez each scored as well. Delaney Riggins (2) and Sophia Falco combined for three assists for the Mustangs who improved to 14-0-1 overall and 10-0-1 in 4A-District 11 play.

Boys soccer

BRADEN RIVER 4, SARASOTA 0 -- Mario Lopez led the visiting Pirates with two goals and an assist as Braden River improved to 7-4-1, 6-2-1 in Class 4A-District.

Sam Goodwin added a goal and an assist, and Elijah Bowers scored for the victors. Domenic Aluise and Mike Villarante pitched in with assists, and Ian Crawford made three saves on the way to his sixth shutout.

Girls basketball

LAKEWOOD RANCH 70, NORTH PORT 51 -- Emily Bulfin scored a game-high 24 points while teammate LaDazhia Williams added 17 points, 15 rebounds and 8 blocks.

Aleah Robinson chipped in with 10 points for the visiting Mustangs, who improved to 11-0 overall and 4-0 in Class 7A-District 10 play.

PALMETTO 63, BRADEN RIVER 47 -- Jeimisha Collins was a force in the paint with 24 rebounds, 10 steals and eight blocks for the visiting Tigers. Tina Stephens had 13 points, 12 boards and seven blocks. Jasmin Garibay added eight points for Palmetto who improved to 9-3 overall and 1-3 in 7A-District play.

Boys basketball

PALMETTO 54, LAKEWOOD RANCH 36 -- Jordan Young and Terry Collins led the way with 11 points apiece as the balanced Tigers defeated the visiting Mustangs in Class 7A-District 10 action.

Jarrid Rhodes contributed 10 points, and Stepvon Saunders pulled down 13 rebounds for Palmetto (8-1, 3-1). Lakewood Ranch got nine points from Cameron Darby.

BAYSHORE 69, GULFPORT BOCA CIEGA 60 -- The visiting Bruins collected their first Class 5A-District 10 triumph of the season behind 20 points from Wesley Jackson and 17 points and 12 rebounds from Thomas McDuffie. Justin Harris added 10 points for Bayshore (4-6, 1-2).
