Shufflin' | Hard to believe season's midpoint approaching fast

December 17, 2013

Time flies when you are having fun.

At year's end, the 2013-14 season will be half over. As we take stock of the fall sector of the season, there is much for which to be thankful.

Tournament attendance is holding up, including the Amateur Division. Part of that success is credited to the large number of schools and clinics offered in recent seasons. They were well attended.

The district offers to hold more schools if clubs so request. In order to allow for time for publicity to gather students, decisions need to be made early. If you or your club is interested, let the leaders know. Your club president could bring the request to the District Open Board Meeting at 1 p.m. Jan. 4 at Bradenton Shuffle Club, or notify Mike Marquis, district president, at 941-345-4777, or this columnist at 941-756-8548.

Note that District Open Board Meetings offer a "town meeting" atmosphere where anyone may speak on any pertinent subject. Only district board members and club presidents in attendance may vote. The meetings are amicable and pleasant and offer a free and constructive opportunity to keep up to date on issues.

A current issue in this district is the percentage of draw tournaments. Currently, about half of our Open Division are draws. There is some sentiment to offer a few draws to district amateurs. After all, the district amateurs are learning, so maybe it would be constructive to try that.

Newer competitors may not realize that anybody is welcome to take a position and become an advocate to advance the sport. It is more constructive to work for change than to complain about how bad things are. We actually have more harmony in this district than we experienced in the past. So come on in; the water is fine.
