Honoring the Badge partners BPD with Kingdom Life for children

HERALD STAFF REPORTDecember 17, 2013

BRADENTON -- The sixth annual Honoring the Badge event will be at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Toys R' Us, 512 Cortez Road W.

The Bradenton Police Department is partnering again with Kingdom Life Christian Church forthe community outreach program.

"Through the generous donations of the community, we will be able to provide more than 100 children from at-risk families in the Bradenton area a $25 Toys R' Us gift card," said Deputy Chief of Police Warren Merriman in a press release. "Each child will be teamed with a uniformed Bradenton police officer who will assist them with shopping for toys of their choice."

Merriman said BPD officers look forward to the event each year, because it allows officers and staff to meet children and his/her family.

"Remarkably, our dedication to this program is so strong, that I will have more officers and staff than children to partner with," Merriman said.

Pastor Don Sturiano of Kingdom Life Christian Church said church members appreciate a wonderful opportunity to serve alongside police department members while blessing the community, especially children in need.

"This not only assists in the need for Christmas presents, but for their spiritual needs as well," Sturiano said. "For us this is a demonstration of what it means to keep the Christ in Christmas."
