PALMETTO -- A troublesome two-way stop on Seventh Street and 11th Avenue West will now be transformed into an all-way traffic stop to reduce the chance of a serious or fatal accident residents said would have inevitably happened.
The Palmetto City Commission voted 4-to-1 at Monday's emergency hearing for after a petition signed by 20 people asked for immediate action at the Dec. 3 commission meeting.
Commissioners Tambra Varnadore, Charles Smith, Jonathan Davis and Brian Williams voted for the item.
Tamara Cornwell voted against it saying a traffic study should be conducted before the vote.
"I would rather make a logical decision and not an emotional one," Cornwell said.
Residents complained the corner's obstructed view caused accidents. They said an all-way stop would help prevent accidents.
Mayor Shirley Groover Bryant said she's driven to the two-way stop and saw for herself how crossing can be problematic.
Allen Tusing, Palmetto Public Works director, said the all-way stop was the best course to ensure resident safety.
"It's not a long period of time to wait for someone's safety," Tusing said in response to commissioners saying some residents griped about the 10 seconds it would add to their commute.
He could not give an exact date when the stop signs would be installed, but said warning flags would be placed ahead of the new signs to inform drivers. The stop signs won't be far behind, he said.
"Probably within the next couple of weeks," Tusing said.
In other business:
The Palmetto Pride girls softball team was recognized for their second state title. The team came to the meeting to be honored and to take a picture with the commission.
Lights for Blackstone Baseball fields were delivered, said Tusing. He said construction is on schedule for completion Aug. 24.
"They're moving along," he said. "If they keep on schedule they'll meet their deadline."
The next commission meeting will be 7 p.m. Jan. 6 in the chambers.
