EAST MANATEE -- Diane Kleiner, president of the Braden River Historical Society, was concerned she wouldn't have enough boats Sunday for the first Braden River Boat Parade.

After all, it had been more than 20 years since the last boat parade on the river. As of Nov. 28, only a few boats had signed up.

So the Historical Society was thrilled on parade day when 18 nicely decorated boats, kayaks and canoes glided along the river and almost 200 spectators showed up to watch.

"It turned out to be a great event. We didn't have any trouble," Kleiner said.

At the end of the night, parade winners were announced at Linger Lodge Restaurant. The winners:

• Best in Show: Donna Gamsky, boat 18, "I Luv This Barge"

• Best Illuminated: Jack and Dee Boenau, boat 3, "Clothed Captains"

• Best Florida Cracker: Lucas Von Borstel, boat 1, "Me yes"

• Most Festive: Heath and Ashley Marston, boat 4, "Reel Cracker III"

• Most Creative/Original: Judy Zolna, boat 12, "Kayak."
