5 boats honored at Braden River boat parade

EAST MANATEE -- Diane Kleiner, president of the Braden River Historical Society, was concerned she wouldn't have enough boats for the 1st Annual Braden River Boat Parade on Sunday.

After all, it had been over 20 years since the last boat parade on the river. And as of Nov. 28, only a few boats had signed up.

So the Historical Society was thrilled on parade day when 18 nicely decorated boats, kayaks and canoes glided along the river and almost 200 spectators showed up to the event.

"It turned out to be a great event. We didn't have any trouble," Kleiner said.

At the end of the night, parade winners were announced at Linger Lodge Restaurant. The winners are:

• Best in Show: Donna Gamsky, boat 18, "I Luv This Barge"

• Best Illuminated: Jack and Dee Boenau, boat 3, "Clothed Captains"

• Best Florida Cracker: Lucas Von Borstel, boat 1, "Me yes"

• Most Festive: Heath and Ashley Marston, boat 4, "Reel Cracker III"

• Most Creative/Original: Judy Zolna, boat 12, "Kayak"
