Bradenton 'Piano Man' to tickle keys, fans

PALMETTO -- The Christmas season at Family of God United Methodist Church always means special music, said Mary Wiser.

This year's no different.

A Sam and Anita Lane concert will be at 7 p.m. Dec. 13 at Family of God United Methodist Church, 5601 16th Ave. E., Palmetto, with Southern gospel duo McMillan & Life, piano duo Sam Lane and Sherry Hanson, Creative Percussion Ensemble, Turner Chapel AME Praise Choir, Family of God Praise Team and the West Bradenton Baptist Prime Times.

The musical genius of Sam Lane is well known in the area, Wiser said.

Born blind, he began playing the piano at the age of 3.

He graduated from Sarasota High School and Oberlin Conservatory in Ohio. Termed "the Piano Man" when he entertains at churches, restaurants, resorts, mobile home parks and retirement centers nationwide, he and his wife of 30 years live in Bradenton and often perform together.

He is music director for the Family of God United Methodist Church and Turner Chapel AME church in Palmetto.

A tasting fair of holiday goodies will follow the concert.

Also, mark your holiday calendar for a Christmas Carol Sing led by Sam Lane at 5:30 p.m. Dec. 22. There will be finger food to share.

Roser Church plans 'Joy to the World' cantata

ANNA MARIA -- Listen to the story of the birth of Jesus told through the words of your favorite Christmas carols at "Joy to the World: A Celebration of Carols" at 10 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 15.

The cantata performed by the Roser Community Church Chancel Choir is an arrangement by Jay Althouse of seven of the best-loved Christmas carols.

The Chamber Orchestra accompaniment by professional musicians will include two trumpets, French horn, trombone, flute, clarinet, percussion and piano.

There will be no sermon as the words of the carols and brief narration taken from the Bible will tell the story of the birth of Jesus by focusing on the wonder of that first Christmas night. Refreshments in the Narthex following the Cantata.

Roser Church is near the Anna Maria City Pier at 512 Pine Ave.
