Vin's People: Lakewood Ranch, Southeast grads in same Army unit

December 6, 2013

A funny thing happened to U.S. Army Capt. Scott Hall not long ago.

The 2004 Lakewood Ranch High School grad was waiting to conduct a combat equipment jump with the 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team in Hohenfels, Germany.

"So, I struck up a conversation with a new paratrooper sitting next to me, asking him where he was from?" the company commander said.

"Bradenton, Florida," said Pvt. Cowan Porter, a 2012 Southeast High School graduate.

A small world, indeed.

"It's rare to meet someone from your own hometown in the Army," said Hall, a six-year veteran with combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Porter is a vehicle mechanic in Hall's unit, the 1st Squadron, 91st Cavalry Regiment.

• Oh, no! Say it ain't so! Jane Trinci is about to hit the Big 5-0! The milestone lands Dec. 11 for the real brains at Callaghan Tire.

Cheers from parents Dan and Betty Callaghan and sisters Kathy, Missy and Patty.

• Got some Christmas decorations you're thinking of tossing?

Don't.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Manatee County can use them.

Whatever you have still in good condition -- i.e., lights, ornaments, artificial trees, lawn ornaments -- the Boys & Girls Clubs will gladly accept to give club children that magical feeling of Christmas.

The clubs have big areas to decorate so larger items would be ideal.

Decorations can be dropped off at:

• DeSoto Boys & Girls Club, 5231 34th St. W., Bradenton.

• Palmetto Boys & Girls Club, 100 10th St. W. Palmetto.

Call 941-761-2582.

• Has Jay Romine, Manatee Technical Institute's law enforcement academy director, stopped talking trash about alma mater Auburn University's unbelievably outrageous Iron Bowl triumph over archrival Alabama?

• Glenn and Jackie Cobb celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary Thanksgiving Day. Helping them celebrate were children and spouses Rick and Claudia, Ron and Denise, Janet and Rod and John and Karen.

• Nick Zec's alma mater, North Central College of Naperville, Ill., pounded Wisconsin-Platteville, 52-24, in the second round of the NCAA Division III national playoff and faces Bethel University in the national quarterfinals Saturday at St. Paul, Minn.

"We threw the ball maybe 10-15 times per game. Now they throw it 10-15 times per quarter!" joked the ol' Cardinal flanker.

• Remember Saturday's rummage sale/fundraiser for Braden River High School's chorus and band, 8 a.m.-2 p.m., at school, 6545 State Road 70 East. Call Maryann McDevitt at 941-742-3972 for details.
