NOTEWORTHY

• Manatee County will be represented well at the 83rd Dixie Amateur Championship in Coral Springs.

Nelly Korda, Hally Leadbetter, Jennifer Neville, Mika Liu, Remec Carlson, Zhongyang Fu, Daniel Jaramillo, Jordan Miller, Ramsey Touchberry and Charles Wang are competing in the women's (Dec. 17-20) and men's (Dec. 19-22) tournaments.

The women's event is contested at Heron Bay Golf Club, which formerly hosted the PGA Tour's Honda Classic. The men's event is held at three venues, but concludes with the final two rounds at Heron Bay.

• Former PGA Tour player Barry Cheesman opened a new golf academy at Tatum Ridge Golf Links in Sarasota. The Barry Cheesman Golf Academy was launched Sunday and features Cheesman -- who played on the PGA Tour, placing third at the Michelob Championship and shooting a round of 62 at the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic -- and instructor Tim Conaway.

They're offering individual lessons for adults and juniors as well as clinics and playing lessons. The cost for individual lessons varies by time: adults ($60 for half hour, $80 for 45 minutes and $100 for an hour) and juniors ($40 for half hour, $60 for 45 minutes and $70 for an hour). A nine-hole playing lesson is $225.

Cheesman has worked with more than 60 juniors, including Riverview senior Kadi Pallastrone, who won the girls Class 3A state high school golf championship's individual title this past fall.
