Giants officially re-sign Vogelsong

San Francisco, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - The San Francisco Giants have finalized a one-year contract with Ryan Vogelsong that will keep the veteran pitcher with the team for a fourth consecutive season.

The Giants had announced last week that Vogelsong had agreed to terms on a contract that the San Francisco Chronicle reported to be worth $5 million and contained additional incentives. The deal was pending a physical that the right-hander passed on Wednesday.

Vogelsong's signing comes less than a month after the Giants declined a $6.5 million option on him for 2014.

The 36-year-old struggled for much of last season, posting a 4-6 record along with a 5.73 earned run average over 19 starts and missing more than two months with a fractured right hand. He had been one of San Francisco's more reliable starters over the prior two years, putting together a 13-7 mark with a 2.71 ERA in 2011 and winning a career-best 14 games while producing a 3.37 ERA the following season.

Vogelsong also shined during the Giants' run to their latest World Series title in 2012, going 3-0 with an outstanding 1.09 ERA over four starts that postseason.

The 2011 NL All-Star is expected to round out a starting five that also includes returnees Matt Cain, Madison Bumgarner and Tim Lincecum along with free-agent acquisition Tim Hudson.

San Francisco has been quite active during the early portion of this offseason, having also re-signed Lincecum and lefty specialist Javier Lopez in addition to adding Hudson. The team gave outfielder Hunter Pence a five- year contract extension on the final day of the regular season as well.
