ORLANDO -- A student at West Orange High School was shot Wednesday afternoon, the school's principal said in an voice mail message to parents.

Principal Douglas Szcinski said the student was alert upon being taken to the hospital.

The following is a transcript of the voice mail sent to parents:

"Good afternoon parents, this is Douglas Szcinski, principal of West Orange High School. Our school is currently on a lockdown. We are following all safety procedures and precautions. There has been an incident in which one student was shot. That student is alert and being transported to the hospital. Law enforcement is on scene working the situation. We will provide more information as it becomes available. Thank you."

Details are limited at this time. The high school is located on Beulah Road, just southwest of the interchange between Florida's Turnpike and State Road 429, in west Orange County.

School officials confirmed a student was injured in the shooting.

A similar message was posted to the school's Facebook page.

A parent waiting for her son, Alicia Hutta, said he called her husband from another student's phone on one of the buses waiting at the school.

"We need better plans, in case something like this happens where the kids can meet parents, some kind of structure," Hutta said.

Around 2:40 p.m., the Orange County Sheriff's Office said students would be bused to Ocoee High School to be picked up by parents.
