MANATEE -- Manatee County officials Tuesday named veteran services officer Lee Washington the 2013 Employee of the Year.

Washington was awarded the county's top employee award just five months after taking the lead role at the Veteran Service Office, which last year helped 14,000 veterans and their dependents access earned benefits, said Nick Azzara, county information outreach coordinator,

Manatee County Commission Chairman Larry Bustle presented the award to Washington as dozens of friends and colleagues looked on.

"I'm standing here beside the top of the crop today," said Community Services Director Brenda Rogers.

She said she had received more acknowledgement of Washington's good works than she had gotten for any other employee.

Washington, a honorably discharged U.S. Marine, father and grandfather, spoke briefly.

"Anyone that knows me, knows I step away from the limelight," said Washington, noting many people helped him since he joined the county staff in 2009.
