Shufflin' | Trying to keep up with the travels and travails of shuffleboard

December 3, 2013

Honest confession is said to be good for the soul, so here goes.

Last week, we published that FL P-09B would be at Hollywood, according to my schedule.

Unnoticed by this columnist, a change was listed in the center spread of the FL PREVIEW that P-09B would play at Boynton Beach, not many miles from Hollywood in the Southeast Coast District.

I hope no one went to Hollywood last Monday. I try to keep current, but if that change was ever announced at a tournament, I must have missed it. I am sorry and will endeavor to be more vigilant.

A good lesson for us all. It is good to cross-check as changes are sometimes necessary.

Tournament results

• Nov. 25, FL P-09B at Boynton Beach. Ladies Main: 3. Judy Taylor. Men Consolation: 2. Ron Nurnberger-Larry Taylor. Also Nov. 25 at Clearwater, State-Sponsored N/W Singles, Any Amateurs. Men Main: 1. Terry Wright. Consolation: 1. Lowell Williams.

Notable

Attendance at recent state and district tournaments has been steady, but there is room for more competition. Players who have not moved from park or league play to tournament competition are welcome. This columnist offers a free partner-finding service. If you or someone you know wants to try a tournament call me at 941-756-8548. Just now I do have a District Amateur seeking a partner for SWCD A-5 Friday at Bradenton. Call me; my phone takes messages and I return them. (One message from somebody last week spoke so rapidly we could not identify the correct number, sorry).

This offer to match partners applies to all Florida and Southwest Coast District tournaments this season, as it has for more than a decade.

l. lt is free and well worth the price.

2. Every caller is treated with respect.

3. Nobody is forced to accept a partnership not satisfactory to the applicant.

4. It works. In mid-winter we usually average a half dozen matches weekly.

5. One memorable match about six or eight years ago resulted from a call from the East Coast. The caller wanted to play the next day (Monday) in Bradenton. A person from the Central District had that person's name in my book. I gave the caller that person's number; they talked on the phone late Sunday night, met early Monday and drove to Bradenton and won that tournament!

Happy shuffling.
