November 25, 2013

MANATEE A Nokomis man has filed to run against U.S. Rep. Vern Buchanan in next year's election.

Last week, Joe Venuti filed to run in the 16th District, which includes most of Manatee County and all of Sarasota County, according to information from elections websites.

Venuti is running with No Party Affiliation against incumbent Buchanan, who is a Republican. Venuti could not immediately be reached for comment Monday.

Also running under "No Party Affiliation" is Michael Wayne Rodgers, 30.

Rodgers, a security analyst, listed a Sarasota address on campaign documents, but he is a resident of Venice living temporarily in Tampa.

Also in the race is Democrat Mitch Mallett, of Bradenton, a state Democratic committeeman representing Manatee County.
