• West Manatee Fire & Rescue firefighter Jeff Philips earned the profes

sional designation of "Fire Officer" from the Commission on Professional Credentialing. He is one of only 168 FO's worldwide and the second at West Manatee. Philips has been with West Manatee since 2004, is a member of the county's honor guard and hazardous materials team.

• Sunshine Academy's Darius Allen just turned 9 while big brother, Lorenz Allen, a Manatee Hurricane JV running back, was 16 Wednesday, the same day Brian Scott Greer, Canes' JV football ball boy and Sea Breeze Elementary fifth-grader, was 12. Cheers from proud parents Lorraine and Duane Allen of Apollo Beach and Sharon and Rob Greer of Bradenton.

• Boston native Dora Langlois must be the oldest Red Sox fan in Manatee County, hands down. She's 98 and followed them since childhood. Her secret to longevity? Besides the Bosox, she told BayNews 9's Summer Smith, she's never drank or smoked and always used Ponds Cold Cream.
