Three people in custody after double shooting in Brandon

November 21, 2013

BRANDON -- Three people are in custody and two people are in surgery after a series of events in Brandon on Thursday morning that included gunshots, a search for suspects and multiple school lockdowns.

According to Hillsborough County Sheriff David Gee, two people were shot just before 7 a.m. at a home in the 600 block east Morgan Street near Ridgewood Avenue. Those two people were taken to Tampa General Hospital, one with possible life-threatening injuries, the other without.

According to Gee, the incident may have started as a group of people walked from a nearby McDonald's to the home on Morgan Street. Another group of people may have confronted the other group and then followed them to the home, Gee said.

Gee said several people scattered from the rental home after the shooting occurred. Gee said all of the individuals involved may be juveniles. A search ensued and one person was taken into custody near the shooting scene after a short foot chase. Another person also was taken into custody near the home. Officials said multiple people were sought in connection with the shooting, some just being considered witnesses and not suspects.

Lockdowns were enforced at multiple schools in the area, including Yates Elementary, which remains on lockdown as officials continue to search for a weapon used in the shooting.

Gee said the shooting is still under investigation.

"We think we have all the players (involved)," Gee said. "We are still searching for the firearm."
